That Hearty Clan MacAdder |
| What is The Clan MacAdder you ask? It is a loosely connected group of People in the SCA who camp together each August at the Pennsic War. We are not a political Household; our group is in no way associated with any other SCA organizations, and we camp together because of a common bond: WE DON'T LIKE DUST! (Ok, and we like to sleep in if we partied hard the night before, and the Sun will bake you out where we camped in our first years together, before the household actually formed.) Our group formed when several of us got tired camping in the Cornfield at Cooper's Lake Campground. (I like to call this cornfield the Æthelvelt, as it is an Æthelmearc dessert after we leave every year, but others call this the Serengetti. Since the Serengetti is a real place in Africa, I'll stick to Æthelvelt) In that last year on the Veldt, one of our members got so sick from microbes in the dust, coupled with the dust, that he went into Hospital for several days, and was off work for a while. And this was supposed to be a vacation! Anyway, we decided to leave
the Veldt and all it's fun. We needed a name, and Clan MacAdder
seemed easy enough for all to remember. At the time I was the only
member who was active in other aspects of the SCA (Going to other events),
but everyone did have a membership in the SCA (Just not enough time to
go to other events). We decided that down by the Classic Swimming
Hole was a good place to be, so we put in our lottery for that plot.
We ended up (Naive weren't we?) in a bit of the swampiest swamp off of
the Causeway. You had to walk the whole way down the Causeway to
get to us. We put out ticki torches to light our way down the path
(Publick works...) and someone stole all but the one what went out
on its own. (I believe, or at least hope that it was just security
folks took them, and not someone else who stole them.) Anyway between
the swamp and the Isolation, and the over sleeping till late in the afternoon
and missing all the daylight fun because the Sun NEVER woke us up at all,
we decided that it was just the opposite of the Veldt, and we desired
somewhere in between. So we chose the site we have used ever since
the next year.
So, we found this place right on the lake that no one wanted. It was higher than the lake, dries quickly and is right next to a permanent bath house (since replaced with a similarly configured trailer). The only problem is that there are a lot of rocks, and it takes a lot of work to stake out the area and tents, and it is narrow and not as level, over all as one might like. Giovanni (listed below, who maintains this site), got tired of being the one who had to take two weeks of his own time off of vacation at work to participate in the land grab to get this prime parcel, AND do all the back breaking work of putting some form of wall/gate up to mark our territory, and put up as many tents as possible for the later arrivers, so our site looked lived in enough to justify the land we were allotted for us all. Some years he didn't get much help at all, when the others could only get a couple of days off. Finally, Garth's life (Giovanni's "Puppeteer" if you will), finally caught up with him. First (1999) he was too busy at work to take much time off, then (2000) he had a new job and less vacation time, and finally (2001) was just starting a new job after having been laid off for 6 months in a down economy. In 2002 yet another new job and a looming marriage meant little time off still (now working in Theatre meant that evenings and weekends were messed up royally). All these years he did make it up to the war, but didn't run or do much in camp. Finally, the theatre job is fun but doesn't pay well enough to justify the expenses of the war, so 2003 didn't see Giovanni at Pennsic at all. Over the years the stresses of the group, and other interests of some of its members have caused most of the original members to move on to other venues, or to also relegate the SCA to the back burner. Here is a list of folks that I can remember, to some extent or another who have either been (formally or informally by camping alone) associated with or members of the Household at least one year.
